“’And if you make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone; for if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it.’” Exodus 20:25
Why wouldn’t God want a tool used to build an altar? The altar had a very specific purpose; it was to serve as a place for the sacrifice to be offered to God. Therefore, if the altar drew attention to itself, it would lose its intended design. Over time, people tend to make too much of altars and the church building has become something it was never created to be. Instead of looking to the Lord, they looked to the church building; a heap of materials. I believe that this verse speaks to how we should do ministry and life. We need to live in such a way that the attention is not drawn to the altar, but have it be drawn to the Lord; for He is the reason we exist.
